Description
Golden, crispy, and drenched in sweet comfort — these Amish Onion Fritters are a simple yet irresistible treat. With sweet onions coated in a light, crispy batter and glazed with a hint of syrup or honey, they strike the perfect balance between savory and sweet.
Ingredients
- Sweet onions – 2 large, finely diced
- All-purpose flour – 1 cup
- Cornmeal – ¼ cup
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Sugar – 1 tablespoon
- Salt – ½ teaspoon
- Black pepper – ¼ teaspoon
- Milk – ¾ cup
- Egg – 1 large
- Vegetable oil – for frying
- Maple syrup or honey – for drizzling (optional but divine)
Instructions
- Prepare the onions: Finely dice the onions and pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- Make the batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, salt, and pepper. Add milk and egg, stirring until you have a thick, smooth batter. Fold in the chopped onions until evenly coated.
- Heat the oil: In a deep skillet, heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.
- Fry the fritters: Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flattening slightly. Fry 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.
- Drain: Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate to remove excess oil.
- Serve: Stack them on a plate and drizzle with warm maple syrup or honey for a sweet version — or serve plain with ranch or sour cream for savory lovers.
Notes
- For extra crunch, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the batter.
- You can mix in shredded zucchini or corn for variation.
- If you prefer less sweetness, skip the drizzle and sprinkle with sea salt instead.
