Description

Boston Cream Pie Trifle is a decadent layered dessert that combines the flavors of yellow cake, vanilla pudding, and rich chocolate ganache, all beautifully presented in a trifle bowl.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, water)
  • 2 (3.4 oz) boxes instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8 oz) tub whipped topping (or 2 cups homemade whipped cream)
  • 1 ½ cups chocolate ganache or prepared chocolate frosting
  • Chocolate shavings or curls, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yellow cake mix according to package instructions.
  2. Bake in a 9×13-inch pan.
  3. Let cool completely, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together pudding mix and cold milk until smooth and thickened.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 5 minutes to set.
  6. If making ganache: Heat 1 cup heavy cream until just simmering.
  7. Pour over 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy.
  8. Let cool slightly so it’s pourable but not hot.
  9. In a large glass trifle bowl, layer cake cubes on the bottom.
  10. Spoon vanilla pudding over the cake.
  11. Repeat layers until the bowl is nearly full.
  12. Spread chocolate ganache/frosting evenly over the top.
  13. Pipe or spoon whipped topping on top of the chocolate layer.
  14. Garnish with chocolate curls or shavings.
  15. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
  16. Scoop into bowls to serve, making sure each portion has all three layers.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade whipped cream instead of store-bought.
  • Make sure the cake is completely cooled before cutting to avoid crumbling.
  • This dessert can be made a day in advance for convenience.
