Description

A comforting and delicious Cheesy Beef Shepherd’s Pie Bake, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef: 500g (1 lb)
  • Onion, finely chopped: 1 small
  • Garlic, minced: 3 cloves
  • Tomato paste: 2 tbsp
  • Worcestershire sauce: 1 tbsp
  • Beef broth / water: 1/2 cup
  • Paprika: 1 tsp
  • Salt & black pepper: To taste
  • Olive oil: 1 tbsp
  • Potatoes, peeled & cubed: 1 kg (2.2 lb)
  • Butter: 4 tbsp
  • Milk or heavy cream: 1/2 cup
  • Salt & pepper: To taste
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded: 1.5 – 2 cups
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded: 1 cup (optional, for stretch)

Instructions

  1. Make the Mashed Potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water until soft. Drain and mash while hot. Add butter, milk/cream, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Beef Layer: Heat olive oil in a pan. Add onion and cook for 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add broth and simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Assemble the Bake: Preheat oven to 200°C / 400°F. Spread the beef mixture in the bottom of a baking dish. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and smooth evenly. Sprinkle generously with cheddar and mozzarella if using.
  4. Bake: Bake for 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling. For a golden top, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end.
  5. Serve: Let rest for 5 minutes before cutting to help layers set and give clean slices. Serve with a simple green salad, steamed veggies, or garlic bread.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with lentils or mushrooms.
