Description

- 500 g ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small green pepper, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp chili powder (optional for spice)
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- 8–10 thick slices Texas toast or brioche loaf
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting the bread)
- 1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- Fresh parsley or chives (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sloppy Joe Meat: Heat a pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat. Add the onions, garlic, and green pepper. Sauté until softened. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer 8–10 minutes until thickened.
- Prepare the Toast: Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Lightly butter the slices of thick bread. Place on a baking sheet and toast for 5 minutes until lightly golden.
- Assemble: Spoon a generous amount of meat mixture onto each toasted slice. Top with a handful of shredded cheese.
- Bake: Return to the oven for 5–7 minutes, until cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley or chives. Serve warm!
Notes
- Feel free to adjust the spice level by adding more or less chili powder.
- For a vegetarian option, substitute ground beef with lentils or a meat alternative.
- These can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven.
