Description

Crispy Golden Homemade Hush Puppies are a delicious Southern treat, perfect for serving alongside fried fish or as a snack on their own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for a kick)
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion (or green onion)
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp lemon juice)
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter or bacon drippings
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and cayenne.
  2. Stir in the chopped onion.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk, and melted butter.
  4. Pour into the dry mix and stir just until combined (batter should be thick but scoopable).
  5. In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat 2–3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Drop spoonfuls (about 1 Tbsp each) of batter into the hot oil.
  7. Fry 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Don’t overcrowd the pan.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve hot with honey butter, tartar sauce, or alongside fried fish.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding spices like garlic powder or chopped herbs.
  • Ensure the oil is at the right temperature for optimal frying.
  • These hush puppies can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
