Description
Deliciously crispy onion rings, perfect as a snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ pounds sweet onions, sliced into ½-inch rings
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup sparkling water (cold)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onions into ½-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and soak them in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat about 2–3 inches of oil in a deep pot to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to maintain a consistent temperature.
- In a bowl, mix 1 cup of flour with salt, pepper, and optional paprika and garlic powder for dredging.
- In a second bowl, combine remaining flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Whisk in sparkling water until a smooth batter forms.
- Remove onions from buttermilk, shake off excess, dredge in flour mixture, then dip into the batter. Let excess drip off.
- Fry the onion rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.
- Transfer to a wire rack to drain and season immediately with salt.
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add more spices to the flour mixture.
- Experiment with different dipping sauces, such as ranch or marinara.
