Description
Delicious homemade corn dogs made with beef cocktail franks.
Ingredients
Scale
- 24 beef cocktail franks
- 1 cup ground yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup canola oil (for frying)
- to taste mustard (optional dipping sauce)
Instructions
- Start by combining the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a shallow bowl and mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, combine the egg and milk; then whisk until smooth. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients; mix well.
- Heat about 1/2 cup of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the oil is hot. If you add a drop of batter or water to the pan and it ‘pops’ the oil is hot enough.
- When the oil is hot, pierce each cocktail frank with a skewer; then dip into the batter coating all sides and place in the pan.
- Fry 1-2 minutes per side, turning so that each side is golden brown. You will have to do this in batches and do not overcrowd the pan.
- Remove the corndogs from the pan and drain on a sheet pan lined with paper towels to remove any excess oil. Repeat for all franks until they’re all done; then place on a serving platter and serve with your favorite mustard as a dipping sauce.
Notes
- For best results, make sure the oil is hot enough before adding the franks.
- Try adding spices to the batter for extra flavor.
