Description

A rich and moist chocolate cake layered with Nutella frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup Nutella (for frosting)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • Chocolate shavings or nuts (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Carefully mix in the boiling water. The batter will be thin but this is normal.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Place both pans in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the Nutella and beat until well combined and fluffy.
  10. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of Nutella frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  11. If desired, sprinkle chocolate shavings or nuts on top for added texture and flavor.

Notes

  • This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in the fridge.
  • Make sure the cakes are completely cool before frosting.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder.
