Description
A classic Southern dessert featuring layers of creamy banana pudding, vanilla wafers, and whipped cream, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients

- ¾ cup sugar
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour (or ¼ cup cornstarch)
- Pinch of salt
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks (lightly beaten)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4–5 ripe bananas (sliced)
- 1 box (11–12 oz) vanilla wafers
- 2 cups heavy cream (or 2 cups Cool Whip)
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional Toppings: Caramel drizzle, Extra crushed wafers
Instructions
- In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.
- Slowly whisk in milk, then cook over medium heat until thickened (about 6–8 minutes).
- Temper egg yolks by whisking a bit of hot mixture into them, then return to the saucepan.
- Cook 2–3 more minutes until smooth and thick.
- Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla. Cool slightly.
- Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Chill until ready to use.
- In a trifle bowl, 9×13 dish, or serving cups, layer: Vanilla wafers, Banana slices, Warm pudding. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
- Top with whipped cream.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours (overnight best) for flavors to meld.
- Garnish with caramel drizzle, crushed wafers, or more bananas before serving.
Notes
- For a lighter version, you can use Cool Whip instead of heavy cream.
- Make sure the bananas are ripe for the best flavor.
- This dessert can be made a day in advance for better flavor.
